ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN 1872-CC HALF EAGLES

Numismatic Quiz: what i the only issue in the Carson City half eagle series for which not a single coin is currently known in Uncirculated? You guessed either the 1870-CC, 1873-CC or the 1878-CC, right? Well the correct answer is the 1872-CC for which just two properly graded AU58's exist along with another three or four AU55 coins.

This fresh-to-the-market 1872-CC is one of a small number of higher grade pieces known which haven't been brightened or enhanced and this is clearly shown by this coin's lovely natural rose and medium orange-gold color. The strike is somewhat better than average for the issue with good detail at the centers while the surfaces are very clean with no overly detracting marks. Both sides retain some luster and the eye appeal is exceptional.

There are just three APR's for this date in AU55 since early 2007 with none approved by CAC; the highest of these three is $25,300 for a PCGS piece in June 2011.

If you are a serious collector of CC half eagles, you no doubt are aware of the rarity of the 1872-CC in higher grades. This piece is a highlight of the North Dakota Collection and it will be a highlight of its new home.

CAC has approved four in this grade with three finer (all AU58).
