RARE CAC/PCGS AU58 1859-C GOLD DOLLAR

The 1859-C is the rarer of just two Type Three gold dollars made at the Charlotte mint. It is characterized by poor quality planchets and irregular strikes, making examples with good eye appeal very rare.

This coin has been off the market since 1981 and it has the best eye appeal of any circulated 1859-C gold dollar I can recall having seen. It is very lustrous with a slightly reflective quality to the obverse. The color is a warm natural yellow-gold and this is one of the few known 1859-C dollars which hasn’t been dipped or recolored. There is some light friction on the obverse while the reverse is new and nearly choice save for a few small ticks at the center.

No CAC approved AU58 1859-C gold dollar has ever sold at auction. The last PCGS AU58 brought $4,583 as Goldberg 9/17: 1083 but this was very low-end, in my opinion. Before this, no PCGS AU58 has sold at auction since August 2010.

In my opinion, this coin is far nicer than most 1859-C gold dollars graded MS60 and MS61 and it would fit into a savvy specialist’s Charlotte gold dollar set.

CAC has approved 3 in AU58 with none finer.
