EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION CENSUS MS62+ 1858-C HALF EAGLE

The 1858-C is among the most plentiful half eagles from this mint both in terms of overall and high grade rarity. There are as many as 15 known in Uncirculated with most in the lower range of this grade. Properly graded MS62's are very rare with four or five known and only one finer piece than this is known, an NGC MS64 which last sold For $43,475 as Goldberg 6/14: 1824.

This is the single finest 1858-C half eagle I have owned and it is essentially "as made" with exceptional natural dusky russet toning which has never been lightened. The strike is extremely sharp as is common for the issue and even all of the denticles are fully formed which is decidedly uncommon for the issue. There is a small amount of roughness in the planchet as made but I can easily see this coin in an MS63 holder as it blows away the other MS62 examples of this date that I have seen.

A PCGS MS62+ without CAC approval brought $18,400 as Heritage 6/10: 1638.

This lovely coin is nice enough for even the most advanced date set of Charlotte half eagles and it also deserves consideration as a type coin for the collector seeing a single great half eagle from Charlotte.

CAC has approved 3 in MS62 with none finer; this appears to be the only MS62+ which has been approved.
