RARE AND DESIRABLE PCGS/CAC AU53 1842 QUARTER EAGLE
The 1842 quarter eagle is one of the true unknown rarities in all of Liberty Head gold. Only 2,823 were struck but in spite of this low mintage, it is not held in the same regard as many issues of similar rarity. Only 50 or so are known and it is very rare in properly graded AU. In Uncirculated, the 1842 is unique; I purchased this coin (a PCGS MS62) for $31,050 in 1999.
I have owned virtually every nice 1842 quarter eagle graded by PCGS and NGC and I think this is one of my absolute favorites. It is strongly original with deep, even russet hues on the obverse and reverse. With the exception of a small mark in the lower left obverse, the surfaces are exceptional and the eye appeal is far above average for the date. Simply put: I LOVE this coin.
The only AU53 1842 quarter eagle to ever sell at auction was an NGC coin which brought $5,175 in the 2010 ANA sale. No PCGS AU55 has been auctioned since July 2002. I bought a non-CAC NGC AU55 for $9,106 as Lot 13945 in the Heritage 9/16 sale.
Every now and then I buy a coin which I seriously consider “putting away” and this 1842 quarter eagle is one of these.
CAC has this 1 coin in AU53 with 3 finer (two in 55 and one in 58). DWN has sold ALL of these.
