GEM 1859 GOLD DOLLAR

The 1859 is a fairly available issue among the early P mint Type Three  gold dollars but it is very scarce in Gem and quite rare approaching the superb level. The best piece I have personally seen was the amazing Duckor: 4258, graded MS68+ by PCGS, which sold for an equally amazing $37,600.

This lovely Gem was struck from clashed dies and much of the "business" in the fields is actually light clashmarks. Both sides show lovely rich Mint frost below shimmering rose and yellow-gold hues with the reverse a bit more intensely toned than the obverse. Some roughness in the planchet makes the 5 in the date slightly weak and this as as struck.

The last CAC approved PCGS MS66 1859 gold dollar sold for $5,463 as Heritage 2011 ANA: 5333. A PCGS MS66+ with CAC approval sold twice at Heritage in 2017, once at $6,600 and later for $5,280.

This would make a great type coin but it is also nice enough for a world-class set of gold dollars.

CAC has approved 7 in this grade (as well as in MS66+) with 3 finer.
