OUTSTANDING NGC/CAC AU58 1857-C GOLD DOLLAR

The 1857-C is the scarcer of the two Type Three gold dollars from Charlotte. It is a very crudely-produced issue and well-made higher grade pieces are much rarer than most collectors realize. I have only seen two or three I felt were Uncirculated and none of these exceeded the MS61/62 level.

This 100% original example is one of the best made 1857-C dollars I have handled and the quality of the planchet is far above average for the issue. Both sides show deep natural russet color and the surfaces are very clean save for sets of clashmarks in the obverse fields.

The only CAC approved AU58 1857-C dollar to ever sell at auction was a PCGS coin which sold cheaply as Stacks Bowers 3/14: 6164; it realized $6,463.

It is difficult to imagine a nicer 1857-C dollar than this and I regard this date as being very undervalued in properly graded AU58.

CAC has approved 3 in this grade with none finer.
