BEAUTIFUL CONDITION CENSUS PCGS/CAC MS62 1844-D $5
From the standpoint of overall rarity, the 1844-D is among the more available half eagles from Dahlonega with an estimated 325-375 known in all grades. In Uncirculated, however, this is a rare issue with just 10-12 known.
This is an outstanding coin for the grade with thick, unmolested mint frost visible below natural rich yellow-gold color. The strike is amazing with every fine detail up and bold save for the arrow feathers on the reverse. Under a 5x loupe, some light scuffs can be seen but—in my opinion—this coin is closer to an MS63 than it is to its current MS62 grade.
There is just a single APR for the 1844-D half eagle in PCGS/CAC MS62, and it is for a coin that I purchased as Stack’s Bowers 2024 ANA: 3336 for $28,800. A PCGS MS63 or finer has not sold at auction for nearly 20 years.
This is an absolutely ideal coin to use as a Dahlonega type half eagle in a seven-mint set, and it is nice enough for a high-end date set of D mint half eagles as well.
Ex Heritage 2025 FUN where I purchased it for $21,600.
CAC has approved two in this grade with a single piece finer (MS64). A total of six 1844-D half eagles in all MS grades have been approved by CAC as of early 2025.
