RARE CAC APPROVED PCGS VF35 1842-D LARGE DATE $5
The 1842-D Large Date is the second rarest half eagle from Dahlonega in terms of overall rarity (trailing only the decidedly more expensive 1861-D), and it is easily the rarest in terms of higher grades. In my opinion, it remains the single most underappreciated issue from this mint.
This is a problem-free Choice VF with pleasing medium green-gold color and some dirt within the lettering on the reverse. I would rank this as among the better collector-grade 1842-D Large Date half eagles that I have seen or sold, and with this degree of eye appeal it is a genuinely scarce issue.
The only recent comparable is the Stack’s Bowers 6/2022: 2101 coin graded VF25 by PCGS and approved by CAC which sold for $8,400. That piece had major damage on the reverse. No PCGS VF35 has sold at auction since 2011.
Unless you have very deep pockets, you aren’t likely to encounter a more pleasing example of this scarce issue.
CAC has only approved eight in all grades. This is the only coin in VF35 with four finer (two AU55 and one AU58).
Ex Stack’s 8/2022: 6096 where I paid $10,800; from the Sykes Collection and purchased from DWN in May 2017.
