VERY RARE GEM PROOF 1871 GOLD DOLLAR WITH CAC APPROVAL

Only 30 Proofs were struck and it is believed that around half of these exist. Just a handful are known with a Deep Cameo (or Ultra Cameo) appearance and the present example appears to be the second best of these, trailing only the NGC PR67 Ultra Cameo which sold for $42,550 all the way back in 2004.

This heavily contrasted example has developed some nice orange-gold toning on both sides since its 2011 auction appearance (see below) and it shows exceptional mirror surfaces with no hairlines or signs of mishandling. A small number of mint-made lintmarks at the O in OF offer a quick sign of recognition to this Gem.

Only two Deep Cameo Proofs in any grade have ever sold at auction; one in 2011 (this coin) and the other, an NGC PR67 Ultra Cameo in 2004 for $42,550.

An important opportunity for the advanced specialist.

CAC has approved 1 in this grade/designation with none finer.

Ex Heritage 11/11: 4158 where it sold for $27,600.
