TIED FOR FINEST GRADED 1858-C QUARTER EAGLE

In Uncirculated, the 1858-C is one of the two most available quarter eagles from this mint along with the 1847-C. There are as many as two dozen 1858-C quarter eagles extant in Uncirculated but nearly all are in the MS60 to MS62 range. I am aware of just four or five which grade MS63 to MS63+ with none finer.

This is the single best 1858-C quarter eagle I have seen or owned and it is a remarkably fresh-appearing coin with rich natural butter-yellow color and thick mint frost. There are a few shallow ticks in the left obverse field and a shallow scuff above the final star but a strong case can be made for grading this remarkable coin a full MS64. There is one other PCGS MS63+ and according to the images of this coin on PCGS Coinfacts, it shows some mint-made roller marks on the reverse.

No PCGS MS63+ 1858-C quarter eagle has ever sold at auction. The record auction price for an MS63 1858-C is $27,600, set all the way back in March, 2004. Three other sales for MS63's of over $24,000 were recorded between 2003 and 2006.

If you are looking for a single high-grade quarter eagle from Charlotte or if you are assembling a world-class set of Liberty Head quarter eagles, here is an ideal piece for your consideration.

CAC has approved 3 in MS63 (including this single piece in MS63+) with none finer.
