"The Numismatist of the Year Award recognizes collectors at the regional and/or national level who have demonstrated outstanding leadership within the hobby and the ANA. The 2024 recipient is numismatic author and U.S. gold coin expert Doug Winter."

Doug began collecting coins at the age of seven, and by the age of ten he was buying and selling at shows in and around New York City. In 1973, at the age of 14, he joined the American Numismatic Association and took his first table at a coin show.

Doug graduated with an English degree, and from 1982-1985 he was the Director of Research for Steve Ivy Rare Coins out of Texas. During these years, his interest in rare 18th and 19th century US gold coins began in earnest.

In 1985, he opened his own consulting business and specialized in research for other companies. Doug would work with Sotheby's, Superior, Christie's, and more during this time.

in 1989, Douglas Winter Numismatics was officially founded, and here we are today, a leading firm in specialized gold coins.

Doug is a member of the Professional Numismatist's Guild since 1988. In 1996, the ANA awarded Doug a Presidential Certificate of Appreciation in recognition for his work for the organization. He has taught classes on US gold coins at the ANA Summer Seminar (1998, 2000, and 2003). He has been a member of the American Numismatic Society since 1981. As a member of the Numismatic Literay Guild since 1983, Doug won the 1997 award for "Best United States Coin Book" for his first edition of the Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint (the 2023 fourth edition is now available). These are just some examples of accolades and accomplishments.

Long story short, Doug has done the work, joined the organizations, participated in shows and educational events, and has literally written The Book on on subjects from Dahlonega to New Orleans.
