SCARCE GEM 1873 CLOSED 3 QUARTER EAGLE

Closed 3 variety.

This is the scarcer of the two varieties of 1873 quarter eagle and the Closed 3 has less than half the mintage figure of its Open 3 counterpart. The Closed 3 is scarce in Gem and very rare finer as evidenced by the fact that only three finer have been recorded by PCGS two in MS66 and a single coin in MS66+.

This frosty Gem exhibits nice natural light rose and yellow-gold hues on both sides. There are a few minor scuffs in the left obverse field and some minor weakness of strike on the eagle's right leg.

A CAC approved PCGS MS65 sold for $4,935 as Heritage 7/17: 3201 while a non-CAC sold for $3,290 as Stacks Bowers 3/17:4381.

This Gem is well-priced at less than $4,000.
