GEM SLIDER AU58+ 1848-C QUARTER EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
Variety-1.
While fairly common in the lower circulated grades, the 1848-C is a rare and very underrated coin in higher grades. It is almost never seen in properly graded, original AU58, and I am aware of just two or three in Uncirculated with just one finer than MS61. This makes this wonderful, fresh-to-the-market coin a real find for the quarter eagle specialist or the Charlotte collector. It is covered with superb deep rich green-gold color; the “right” hue for this issue and a shade that I see on just a handful of examples as nearly all survivors have been cleaned or dipped.
This piece has a remarkable strike for the date with no signs of weakness at the centers; some 1848-C quarter eagles (from the Variety 2 late die state) are very weak at the centers from buckling. The surfaces are very clean and the overall eye appeal is better than for nearly any example of this date that I can recall having seen.
Heritage 1/12: 6114, graded AU58+ by PCGS and also approved CAC, is the most pertinent auction comparable and it brought a strong $9,250. I think the present example is more appealing due to its originality and it is an excellent value for the collector who demands the finest.
CAC has approved 3 in AU58 (including this one in AU58+) with none finer.
