SCARCE AND POPULAR CAC APPROVED PCGS MS62 1890-CC EAGLE

The 1890-CC is the second most difficult of the four Carson City eagles from the 1890′s, trailing only the rare 1893-CC. There are a decent number known in Uncirculated but most of these grade MS60 to MS61. The 1890-CC is quite scarce in properly graded MS62 and rare above this.

This example is very pleasing for the date and grade with vibrant, frosty luster that show a touch of sunflower-gold and rose coloration. There are fewer marks than one might expect for the grade and the strike is excellent. The overall eye appeal is really exceptional.

An average-for-the-grade PCGS MS62 without CAC approval recently sold for $8,400 as Heritage 2/18: 4317. A CAC approved PCGS MS62 realized $9,400 as Stacks Bowers 2016 ANA: 3416 while another piece in the same grade--but slabbed by NGC-- brought $8,813 in the Heritage 7/16 auction.

If you can even find one, a nice PCGS MS63 1890-CC eagle will cost you close to $20,000; an overbuy for most collectors.

CAC has approved 15 in this grade with 3 finer.
