CONDITION CENSUS CAC APPROVED 1857 GOLD DOLLAR, GRADED MS67 BY PCGS

The small number of Superb Gem 1857 gold dollars which exist are from a group discovered in 1983. I am aware of three or four separate coins which grade MS67. The single finest known is a PCGS/CAC MS68 from the Duckor Collection which realize a record-setting $51,700 when it sold in the 2015 ANA auction.

This glorious Gem example shows rich peach-gold and rose colors on the obverse and the reverse. It is sharply struck with some clashes seen on both sides and some swelling of the obverse die at the 6:00 border. The I in AMERICA is faint as the result of die failure and this is seen on many 1857 gold dollars. The surfaces approach perfection and really the only difference between this coin and the aforementioned MS68 is that coin's fantastic deep, natural hues.

There are just two APR's for this date in MS67 since 2008 and both occurred in 2010. One example (very similar to this coin but different) realized $19,550 while the other realized $18,400.

This superb coin is a highlight of the North Dakota Collection and it should be of interest to both collectors seeking a great Type Three dollar for a type set or for a specialist assembling a truly great gold dollar date set.

CAC has approved 5 in this grade with 1 finer (MS68).
