CONDITIONALLY SCARCE PCGS/CAC MS64 1901-O $10
The 1901-O is common in grades through MS63. It is a tough issue to locate in properly graded MS64, and Gems are all but unknown. PCGS has, in fact, graded just two coins higher than MS64: an MS64+ and an MS66.
While I would never promise an upgrade, this piece looks nicer than MS64 to me and I wouldn’t be stunned to see it in an MS64+ holder. This coin is as original as this date comes with undipped frosty surfaces graced by lovely natural green-gold and orange hues. There are some very minor scuffs seen in the fields but these are far less prevalent than what is normal for the date. In my opinion, this piece as nice an example of this date as you are likely to locate.
A CAC approved PCGS/CAC MS64+ sold for $9,000 as Heritage 2/2020:3385.
This is probably my favorite late date New Orleans eagle in this exceptional set. It would be an ideal type coin for a collector who seeks a single high-quality With Motto eagle.
CAC has approved seven in this grade (this includes one in 64+) with none finer.
