RARE PCGS MS64 1860-S GOLD DOLLAR
The 1860-S is one of five Type Three gold dollars from San Fransisco and a with the other four, it is very rare in MS64 and higher grades. PCGS has graded just a single 1860-S higher than MS64 and that is the Duckor: 4260 coin that brought $31,725 when it was last auctioned in 2015. The fact that the sole Gem example of this date currently extant (and a PCGS/CAC Gem to boot) sold for such a reasonable amount basically summarizes my feeling about these San Francisco gold dollars. A Gem 18860-S gold dollar should be a $75,000 coin and were it made at any of three Southern mints it likely would be.
This is a nice, fresh example with medium natural yellow-gold color. Both sides are very frosty and show good overall definition. A few small marks are the sole reason this coin is not a Gem.
The last 1860-S in PCGS MS64 to sell at auction brought just $9,000 as Heritage 11/2020: 3079. It was the Simpson coin and given the overall quality of that set, it is surprising that his 1860-S was pretty pedestrian when compared to his numerous finest known gold dollars. In March 2024, an NGC MS64 sold for $10,200.
