FINEST KNOWN AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE 1876 PROOF $3.00, JUDD-1482
J-1482 (R-8). Regular dies trial piece struck in Copper and later expertly gilted.
A fascinating and immediately appealing pattern issue given the rarity of the regular issue 1876 three dollar gold pieces which are only known in Proof. A factor to consider regarding this coin is its cost versus that of a regular issue 1876 three in PR66; a coin which is likely worth over $200,000 and which exists only in an NGC Flavor.
The coin itself is superb with rich amber color over highly reflective fields. A few light hairlines in the lower right obverse are almost certainly the reason for this coin failing to gain CAC approval. But, in my strong opinion, a coin of this magnitude doesn’t need a sticker to prove its worth.
Ex Simpson Collection 2024 FUN: 4276 where it sold for $37,200.
