A CONDITION CENSUS CACG MS64+ 1849-O DIME
Large O.
While not as rare as the 1850-O, 1851-O, and 1852-O dimes in higher grades, the 1849-O is a solid High R-6 in Uncirculated with likely not more than 12-15 known. I am aware of just three or four that grade MS64 or finer. There is a single MS65 graded by PCGS that—from its image on PCGS Coinfacts appears to be somewhat dull—as well as three MS64 coins encapsulated by this service. This includes the Bender coin which has been approved by CAC and whcih brought $14,400 on two separate occasions (once in 2022 and again in 2024). The coin I’m offering was last sold by GFRC as a PCGS/CAC MS64 for $14,000 in late 2025. It has subsequently been raised up to MS64+ by CACG, and I agree with the current grade.
The color and vibrancy of this coin make it special. Unlike the two specific coins I mentioned above, it is not over-toned and below the pleasing multi-hued reddish and steel blue splashes, one can plainly see bright mint luster.
As with all pre-1853 silver coinage from New Orleans, this is a rare and seemingly undervalued issue in this grade.
This is the single highest graded 1849-O at CACG as well as the sole coin in MS64+ approved at CAC.
