CONDITIONALLY RARE PCGS/CAC MS63+ 1894-O EAGLE

The 1894-O eagle is most often seen in the AU55 to MS62 range. It is very scarce in properly graded MS63, and it is extremely rare above this with only one graded higher than MS63+ at PCGS (an MS64), and a single Gem (an NGC MS65) currently known.

This is one of the cleanest 1894-O eagles I have seen or owned with a virtual absence of the usual nicks and scuffs seen on the surfaces. The strike is sharp, the color is an appealing soft orange-gold with rose overtones, and both sides have excellent frosty luster. A few very faint ticks in the lower left obverse field are likely all that kept PCGS from grading this coin a full MS64.

There is just one other MS63+ 1894-O eagle graded by PCGS and it sold for $4,818 as Heritage 6/16: 4823. It lacked CAC approval and was clearly inferior to the present example.

This date is essentially unavailable finer than MS63+ and the last MS64 (an NGC coin) to sell at auction brought $9,775 all the way back in February 2009.

CAC has approved three in MS63 with none finer; this includes this one piece in MS63+.
