This is the scarcest date in the popular “short set” of New Orleans late date eagles made from 1888 through 1906. It is seldom seen finer than MS62, although there are no less than three examples of this issue in the Islay Collection.
This sharply struck piece is frosty with nice natural honey-gold color. There are some fairly noticeable abrasions in the lower left obverse field which limit the grade.
There haven’t been any sales of the 1899-O eagle in PCGS/CAC MS62 since 2018 when two different examples sold for $2,640 (10/2018) and $2,400 (1/2018).
This is the best available quality for this issue at under $3,000.
CAC has approved 16 in this grade with 14 finer.
