ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN 1860-S EAGLES, GRADED AU58+ BY PCGS

The 1860-S is among the rarest No Motto eagles from any mint, and I regard it as the third rarest issues of this design type from San Francisco, trailing just the 1864-S and the 1865-S Normal Date. It is unique in Uncirculated with PCGS having graded a single coin in MS60 and none finer.

As befits a coin with a “plus” grade, this coin has lots of eye appeal. I can’t see any readily apparent wear with just the lightest amount of rub on the obverse high spots. The color is a medium russet hue which is 100% natural, while the surfaces are reasonably clean for an issue almost never seen with choice surfaces and with fully natural color. Unlike the few 1860-S eagles from Fairmont, this coin isn’t too dark for some collectors.

No PCGS AU58 or AU58+ have ever been offered for sale via an American public auction. In the Stack’s Bowers 4/2022 auction, a nice PCGS/CAC AU55+ 1860-S eagle realized $34,800.

If you are a serious collector of No Motto San Francisco eagles, or even if you just like really cool Civil War era gold, this is an extremely important coin.
