SUPERB DEEP CAMEO GEM 1896 HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
There were 103 Proof half eagles made in 1896, of which around half exist. The quality of the Mint’s workmanship on all Proofs was at its height in this era, and this can be seen on this coin which exhibits marvelous full black and white contrast between the heavily frosted devices and the watery reflective fields.
This piece is kept from a PR66DCAM grade solely on account of a small mint-made line opposite star twelve. If the coin is tilted towards a light source, it is possible to see some light toning in front of the third star.
This is the sole 1896 half eagle to grade PR65+DCAM. PCGS has also graded five in PR66, two in PR66+, and a single coin in PR67+ which holds the record price for this date at $102,000 in early 2024.
A coin with great visual appeal and in strong demand by type collectors.
CAC has approved this one coin in PR65+DCAM with six finer (best is PR67).
