OUTSTANDING NGC/CAC AU58 1884-CC HALF EAGLE

The 1884-CC half eagle has a similar rarity profile to its counterpart, the 1884-CC eagle. It is rare in properly graded AU58 and very rare in Uncirculated with only three or four known; none finer than MS62.

This is among the two or three nicest AU58 examples of this date I have seen or handled. It shows natural russet color with strong orange-gold and reddish overtones on the reverse. The strike is totally hammered and the surfaces show just a few small scuffs. This piece appears to have little--if any--wear and it probably saw no actual circulation.

The last CAC approved AU58 1884-CC half eagle to sell at auction was a PCGS graded piece which realized $9,694 as Stacks Bowers 5/13: 2494. In the ensuing five years, the demand for really nice CC half eagles has increased.

It has been years since an Uncirculated 1884-CC half eagle has been available to advanced collectors and this nice AU58 represents decidedly above-average quality for the issue.

CAC has approved 11 in this grade with 1 finer (MS61).
