RARE 1873-CC HALF EAGLE, GRADED EF40 BY PCGS
The 1873-CC is only slightly less rare overall than the better-known (and higher-priced) 1870-CC and it is among the more difficult With Motto half eagles of any date to locate in EF and higher grades.
Most 1873-CC half eagles graded EF40 by both services are unappealing and this piece presents nicely with natural russet color over relatively unmarked surfaces. There is a faint hairline or two arcing in the left obverse field and these are not easily seen without magnification. The overall eye appeal is far better than average.
The last PCGS EF40 1873-CC half eagle to sell at auction realized $11,163 as Heritage 4/17: 15942 and only two EF40's from this service have crossed the block since January 2007.
Knowledgeable collectors will quickly realize the importance of this offering.
