COLLECTOR GRADE 1875-CC HALF EAGLE

The 1875-CC half eagle is represented by a surviving population of around 150 coins, mostly in the VF-EF range. Lower grade examples are often characterized by unnatural, harshly processed surfaces.

This is a pleasing example with a sharper obverse than reverse; I grade the former around VF30 or so by itself. Both sides show natural green-gold color and this piece is choice save for an old scrape on the lower reverse through the first C in the mintmark down to the right side of the E in FIVE.

Three 1875-CC half eagles graded VF25 by PCGS have sold since June 2008 and these have realized $3,525 (2013), $3,795 (2009) and $3,738 (2008). The last two sales are for the same coin while the piece sold in 2013 was very low-end.

These early date CC half eagles in affordable collector grades are always in demand.
