IMPORTANT CONDITION CENSUS 1874-CC HALF EAGLE, PCGS/CAC AU58

The 1874-CC is the second most available Carson City half eagle from this decade after the common 1879-CC. It becomes hard to locate in AU53 to AU55 and it is rare in Uncirculated with just two known in Uncirculated (both PCGS MS62). One of these just brought $90,000; a record price for the date.

This is a very choice coin with just a tiny amount of friction seen on the high spots. The strike is sharp and the surfaces are very choice save for two thin, short scratches between the 8 and the 7 in the date. The color is a rich orange-gold hue which is seen on both sides and which adds considerable appeal to an already-choice presentation.

The last two APR's for this date in PCGS AU58 are $19,388 in December 2015 and $21,738 in August 2014. A nice CAC approved piece realized $27,025 as Heritage 2012 ANA: 5365.

Given that a nice MS62 1874-CC half eagle just sold for $90,000, this pleasing AU58 with CAC approval seems like very good value at our asking price.

CAC has approved four in this grade with only one finer (MS62).
