SCARCE 1881-CC HALF EAGLE GRADED AU55 BY PCGS AND APPROVED BY CAC

The 1881-CC is by far the scarcest Carson City half eagle struck after 1878. Around 100-125 are known with most grading in the EF and lower AU grades. Properly graded AU55 to AU58 coins are very scarce and this date is a rarity in Uncirculated with three to five known.

This lightly worn, lustrous example is characterized by relatively mark-free surfaces and pleasing medium orange-gold color.

Three PCGS AU55 1881-CC half eagles have sold at auction since June 2005 and none were CAC approved. The most recent APR is Heritage 12/17: 3254 which realized $9,625.

This date is rarely seen in grades higher than AU55 and the last PCGS AU58 sold at auction was all the way back in July 2013.

CAC has approved five in this grade with six finer.
