IMPORTANT CONDITION CENSUS 1866-S NO MOTTO
While a single coin is graded higher than this at PCGS (an MS61 that brought a record $50,525 as Stack’s Bowers 3/2017: 3111), this coin is the single best 1866-S No Motto half eagle I have ever seen. In addition, it is numismatically significant as the final year of issue for this type produced at the San Francisco mint. The 1866-S No Motto is a scarce coin in all grades, and a rarity on Choice AU with likely not more than a half dozen known.
I see no evidence of this coin ever having been in circulation and the color and surfaces are 100% original. The obverse is just about perfect for the grade, while two small abrasions under the M in AMERICA will not bother even the most nit-picky collector.
This exact coin is the sole CAC approved 1866-S No Motto half eagle in any AU grade to ever sell at auction.
An exceptional coin which ranks high in the Condition Census for the issues.
CAC has approved this one coin in AU58 with none finer.
Ex Heritage 2025 FUN where I purchased it for $26,400; from the Drumwright Family Collection and earlier sold as Lot 5113 in the Stack’s Bowers 4/2022 auction where it realized $40,800. From the Fairmont Hoard.
