POSSIBLE FINEST KNOWN PROOF 1892 HALF EAGLE
It has been written that as many as three to four dozen of the 92 Proofs struck exist today, but given the paucity of recent APRs for 1892 Proof half eagles (only three separate coins have sold at auction since 2016), this range seems a bit on the high side.
This is the finest Proof 1892 half eagle I have ever handled, and it is a stone Gem with striking black and white contrast. There are two small breaks in the frost on the portrait with one on Liberty’s chin, and the other on the jawline but other than this, the coin is nearly perfect with spectacular overall eye appeal.
Due to a significant economic recession in 1893, many Proof gold coins from 1891 to 1894 were melted by the US Mint.
An ideal type coin for the collector seeking a superb 19th century Gem Proof half eagle for less than $100,000.
Ex Heritage 2023 ANA: 3205 where it sold for $72,000; earlier from Stacks Bowers 2021 ANA: 4213 at $66,000 (graded PR67 DCAM by NGC)
