The 1897-O is the third scarcest of the late date eagles made at this mint. It is available in grades through MS63 but it becomes very scarce in MS64, and it is very rare in Gem.
Rich honey-gold color highlights this frosty, lightly abraded example. As is typical for this issue, there is flatness seen on the radial lines of the stars and on the 89 in the date.
The only recent record of sale for a CAC approved PCGS MS62 1897-O eagle is Heritage 2/2020: 3352 which sold for a very strong $3,840.
This issue is not easily located finer than this.
CAC has approved 25 in this grade with nine finer.
