SCARCE PCGS MS60 1882-O $10

The 1882-O is the most available of the three low mintage eagles produced from 1880 through 1882. It is reasonably easy to locate in all circulated grades, but it remains very scarce in Uncirculated with around 15 known; mostly in MS60 to MS61.

This is a strictly “new” coin with no wear and strong claims to an MS61 grade. There are fewer marks than normal for the grade and the color is a natural honey-gold hue which is correct for this issue.

There are two relevant auction comparables for this date in PCGS MS60. Thee most recent is Stack’s Bowers 3/2021: 4165 at $7,800 (the coin was very low-end in my opinion), and Heritage 1/2017: 6928 at $8,225.

Given that most MS61 examples of this date are indistinguishable from this MS60, and that MS62 and finer 1882-O eagles are nearly impossible to locate, this piece makes sense for a high-end collection of With Motto New Orleans eagles.
