SCARCE PCGS AU58 1844-O $10

Winter-1.

The mintage figure for the 1844-O is a fairly generous 118,700 and this issue is common in grades through AU55. Nice AU58s are legitimately scarce, and the 1844-O is a very rare coin in Uncirculated with fewer than a dozen known, as well as a unique Proof.

This is a really nice coin for the grade and among the few AU58 1844-O eagles I have seen that wasn’t scrubbed. It shows a generous amount of natural mint luster on both sides and the color is a very pleasing medium orange-gold. There are a typical number of scuffs on the surfaces with the reverse actually displaying more marks than the obverse. I regard this example as being far above-average for the date and grade.

There have been eight APRs for the 1844-O eagle in PCGS AU58 since the beginning with the most recent one occurring in March 2020 when Stack’s Bowers sold a very low-end piece for $4,800. Prior to this, Heritage sold an example for $5,880 in December 2019, and another low-end piece for $6,600 in August 2019.

To my eyes, this piece is very solid for the grade and it is just a small notch below the quality that would qualify it for approval at CAC (and an $8,500+ price tag…).
