VERY CHOICE CONDITION CENSUS 1880-O $10.00 IN PCGS MS61

While the population of Uncirculated 1880-O eagles has nearly doubled in the past decade (due to discoveries in overseas hoards such as Fairmont) this has impacted mainly the MS60 to MS62 range. This date remains exceedingly rare in MS63 and finer, with one known in MS63 (it recently sold for slightly over $100,000), and the finest known is a lovely PCGS MS64 owned by the Tyrant Collection.

This piece is absolutely outstanding for the issue with blazing, unimpaired luster below natural honey-gold color which deepens at the outer left obverse and reverse fields from 7:00 to 9:00. I grade this coin a solid MS62 and it is clearly finer than any of the other MS61 1880-O eagles I’ve seen or sold.

The most recent APR for a PCGS MS61 1880-O $10.00 is Heritage 7/2022; 3334 at $20,400. I feel that my coin is at least one point finer.

From the 400 Esplanade Collection via Douglas Winter Numismatics, Heritage 2/2018: 4307 where it sold for $21,600 as PCGS AU58 in an old green label holder; Admiral Collection. Subsequently removed from the holder and upgraded at PCGS to its current MS61 grade.
