SCARCE PCGS AU55 1852-O EAGLE

Winter-2.

The 1852-O is among the scarcer No Motto eagles from New Orleans. There are not many which grade as high as AU55, and this issue is very rare in Uncirculated with just two or three known.

This piece shows unusual purplish-gold color in the obverse filed while the reverse is a more even deep yellow-gold. The strike is typical for the date with some weakness on the radial lines in the stars and on the curl directly behind the ear of Liberty. A few marks are seen in the middle of the left obverse fields but the surfaces are actually fairly clean for an issue which is generally very marky.

Since early 2014, there have been just three 1852-O eagles (all the same coin!) graded AU55 sold at auction, with the most recent result occurring in November 2020 when Heritage sold an example for $7,800; this coin had some obtrusive streaks on the obverse.

The most recent sale for a PCGS AU58 1852-O eagle (and the first appearance at auction since early 2014) realized $20,400.
