SCARCE PCGS AU55 1861-S $10.00

This date is a bit more available than the rare 1859-S, and the very rare 1860-S as examples have been repatriated from overseas sources. This date has stayed scarce in choice AU and it remains unique in Unciruclated, with the ex Warren Miller coin in NGC MS61 still holding the price record for the date at $67,563.

While lustrous and retaining most of its natural russet hues, the surfaces are somewhat busy with some marks seen in the lower right obverse field.

Two nice PCGS AU55s sold at auction in 2022. One brought $15,000 and it wasn’t approved by CAC, while the other—which was stickered—sold for $22,200.
