SCARCE PCGS/CAC 1854-O LARGE DATE $10

The 1854-O Large Date is the more available of the two distinct issues of this year. It is not often seen in properly graded AU58, and it is extremely rare in Uncirculated with no more than four or five extant.

This high-end example is very lustrous and it shows light wear which is mostly confined to the high spots on the obverse. There is some weakness of strike on the curl behind the ear of Liberty which should not be mistaken for wear, and a few of the stars show weakness on their radial lines. Both sides show pleasing natural light green-gold and yellowish-gold color and there are very few marks of note. This piece is far above-average for the date and grade.

There is a single auction record for a CAC approved PCGS AU58 1854-O Large Date eagle, and this is Goldberg 9/2020: 1410 which brought $8,700. Heritage 2/2020: 3231 was also graded AU58 by PCGS but it was not approved by CAC; it sold for $9,000. Prior to these two sales, a PCGS AU58 example of this date hadn’t been sold at auction since May 2005.

With Uncirculated examples of this date all but unavailable (none have sold since September 2015) this pleasing piece represents the nicest 1854-O Large Date eagle which most specialists are likely to purchase.

CAC has approved nine in this grade with two finer.
