PCGS AU58 1881-O $10
The 1881-O is now a harder date to locate in AU58 than the 1880-O, but it remains slightly more available in Uncirculated. There are still just a dozen or so in Uncirculated with virtually all in the MS60 to MS61 range.
This piece is technically an Uncirculated coin but it has been net-graded as an AU58 by PCGS on account of numerous abrasions on both sides. This is common for this date and I have never seen an AU58 1881-O eagle that didn’t display fairly dense marks from being shipped loose in bags to overseas bank vaults. This piece hasn’t been overly brightened and it shows natural golden-orange color with rings of deeper color at the borders.
Just two PCGS AU58 examples of this date have sold at auction since early 2011. In October 2020 one brought $5,040 while a low-end one sold cheaply in November 2019 for $4,320.
This piece seems like good value at current levels, especially in comparison to the 1880-O eagle.
