SCARCE PCGS AU58 1860-O $10

This is a numismatically significant issue as it is the final No Motto eagle struck at the New Orleans mint until it re-opened in 1879. The 1860-O is scarce in the higher AU grades, and it is rare in Uncirculated with fewer than 10 coins currently accounted for.

This is a very choice coin for the grade which I think deserves serious reconsideration by CAC for eventual approval. It is lustrous and very clean for the issue with an especially choice obverse; the reverse has some marks in the field behind the head and neck of the eagle. Both sides are frosty and show complete detail save for a number of the stars which are flat at the radials.

Only two PCGS AU58 1860-O eagles have sold at auction in over 25 years, with a non-CAC example bringing $8,813 in June 2015, and a CAC example selling for $13,200 in February 2020. In April 2021, a PCGS MS60 example with a large planchet defect on the reverse sold for $17,418.

Unless you have $20k budgeted for an Uncirculated example of this date, the presently-offered PCGS AU58 is going to be the nicest available 1860-O eagle for your collection.
