NICE CAC APPROVED PCGS AU58 1860-D HALF EAGLE

Variety 46-GG. Medium D (designated by PCGS).

For many collectors, the 1860-D is the only half eagle from this mint struck in the final decade of operations that they will purchase. It is very scarce in properly graded AU58 and rare in Uncirculated.

This coin almost certainly could have graded MS61 on a good day as it is almost fully lustrous and shows no significant wear; just a bit of friction on the high spots. The color is a pleasing natural yellow gold with some orange flashes at the borders which become more evident as the coin is tilted towards a light source. Small handling marks can be seen on both sides but these are shallow and inconsequential. The overall eye appeal is excellent.

No CAC approved PCGS AU58 example of this date has ever sold at auction. There have been three non-CAC PCGS AU58 1860-D half eagles which have sold since late 2010. The most recent sale was for $5,890 in 9/2019 while the others brought $5,405 in 6/2015 and $5,875 in 1/2013.

This is a very high end coin which represents the nicest available quality for this date without spending five figures for an Uncirculated piece—if you can even find one.

CAC has approved four in this grade with three finer.
