PCGS/CAC AU55 1843-D $2.50
Variety 4-H. Small D (designated by PCGS).
The 1843-D is the single most available quarter eagle from Dahlonega both in terms of overall and high grade rarity. While a number have been graded AU55, pieces with natural color and choice surfaces are not often seen.
This is a well-made and totally charming example with good overall detail and just a slight amount of actual wear. The obverse is a deep russet shade with some reddish-orange overtones, while the reverse shows deeper color at 6:00.
There are four auction records for this date in PCGS AU55 since 2011 and none are for a CAC approved coin. DLRC sold one in November 2018 for $3,600, while the last public record was for $3,055 in September 2016.
This is one of the very few Choice AU quarter eagles from this mint with CAC approval which can be purchased for under $4,000.
CAC has approved five in this grade with 16 finer.
