RARE NGC AU55 1840-D QUARTER EAGLE

The 1840-D is numismatically significant as the first Liberty Head quarter eagle from Dahlonega. It is among the rarest quarter eagles from this mint with around 75 known in total from an original mintage of just 3,532. This issue is rare in properly graded AU55 and it is extremely rare in Uncirculated with just two or three known.

This piece is considerably more original than usual for this issue and it shows medium russet hues on both sides. The strike is erratic as is common for the issue with noticeable weakness at the central reverse; this is clearly the result of significant die cracks which are plainly visible. There is a semi-circular mark in the left obverse field and a reverse contact mark directly over the eagle’s left wing. All in all, this is a nice coin for the date and grade.

An inferior NGC AU55 just sold for $14,949 in an October 2020 Great Collection auction. Just three other coins graded AU55 by NGC have sold since early 2010, with the most recent sale bringing $14,040 in a 9/2017 Bonham’s auction.

The 1840-D is rare from any perspective and it is a date missing from many advanced sets of Dahlonega quarter eagles.
