SCARCE UNDERVALUED PCGS AU58 1854-D GOLD DOLLAR

Variety 6-H.

With a mintage of just 2,935, the 1854-D is the scarcest Type One gold dollar from this mint. It is very scarce in the higher circulated grades and very rare in Uncirculated. Given this date’s obvious rarity, it has always surprised me that it doesn’t bring a bigger premium when compared to much more common dates of this type.

The strike seen on this golden-orange example is typically soft but the date and the mintmark are bold. The surfaces are somewhat filmy and this covers some underlying marks.

Since early 2008, only three pieces graded PCGS AU58 (including this coin; see below) have sold at auction with prices ranging from a low of $5,760 to a high of $6,465 (7/2015).

Ex Goldberg 9/2019: 1103 where it brought $5,760.
