RARE PCGS AU55 1856-D GOLD DOLLAR

Variety 8-K.

A scant 1,460 were minted and this first-year-of-type issue is considered to be among the more difficult gold dollars from Dahlonega to locate in any grade.

The strike is typical for the issue with weakness on the U in UNITED and the 5 in the date. The surfaces are hairlined from a past cleaning and are overlaid with with green-gold and yellow hues. We note some scratches in the upper obverse field and a very small natural planchet fissure through the O in OF.

Since the Summer of 2008, just three PCGS AU55 examples of this date have sold at auction. The last APR dates back to January 2013 when Heritage sold a piece for $9,400.

A hard issue to locate in really any grade.
