RARE LARGE MINTMARK 1843-D QUARTER EAGLE, THE HIGHEST GRADED APPROVED BY CAC
Variety 4-I. Large D (designated by PCGS)
It is believed that 3,537 1843-D quarter eagles were struck in October 1843. This variety is well-known within the series, and many collectors seek to include it along with the far more common Small D. The 1843-D Large D is unique in Uncirculated (the Bass II: 349 coin is in an MS61 holder) and it is quite rare in AU with likely fewer than 10 currently known.
This example shows “old school” green-gold color on both sides. The curls below RTY in LIBERTY are weak as always, but the overall detail is acceptable for the grade. There is plenty of remaining luster and this is among the best 1843-D quarter eagles I can recall seeing.
On the insert, PCGS mentions that the mintmark is repunched. Under 5x power, I see what almost looks like the base of another mintmark but am not certain if this is the case. I invite the new owner to carefully research this coin and to get back with me.
In July 2018, Scotsman sold a CAC approved PCGS AU50 1843-D Large D quarter eagle which I think is nicer than this piece for a strong $5,175. That is the second highest auction price ever recorded for this variety.
If you are a highly specialized Dahlonega quarter eagle specialist, I don’t need to tell you how important this offering is.
For the Large D variety this is the single finest graded by CAC.
