RARE PCGS AU58 1855-D GOLD DOLLAR WITH A FULL DATE

Variety 7-I.

Fewer than 100 examples of this numismatically significant date exist from an original mintage of 1,811. The 1855-D has become among the more sought-after issues of any denomination from this mint due to its status as a one-year type. There are just three or four known which qualify as Uncirculated which makes a nice AU coin very desirable.

This piece is commendable for showing just about the best strike you are likely to find on an 1855-D dollar. The date is razor sharp and there is no weakness at the borders. The vivid orange-gold coloration seen on both sides covers lustrous and minimally abrades surfaces. There are some light clashmarks at the centers and a bit of roughness in the left obverse field which is clearly mint-made.

Since the Summer of 1999, just three PCGS AU58 examples of this date (including this coin; see below for more information) have sold at auction with the most of these coins bringing $57,000 as DLRC 4/2020: 5199.

Uncirculated 1855-D gold dollars are essentially unavailable which makes this AU58 desirable as the best available quality for the issue.

Ex; Goldberg 9/2019: 1107 where it sold for $49,200
