RARE PCGS/CAC AU58 1860-D HALF EAGLE

Variety 46-FF. Large D (designated by PCGS).

1860-D half eagles are found with a Medium D and a Large D mintmark. The latter is considerably scarcer.

As a date, the 1860-D is scarce in the higher circulated grades and properly graded AU58s are about as nice as this date is generally seen. The 1860-D Large D is very scarce in AU58, and this piece is likely in the Condition Census for the variety.

Bright yellow-gold surfaces show a majority of frosty mint luster and the surfaces show just a few inconsequential ticks. The strike is typical for this variety with some weakness on the radials of the first two stars and at the arrow feathers on the reverse.

Only one APR exists for the 1860-D Large D half eagle in PCGS AU58, and this was for Heritage 4/2014: 6436 which brought $6,463 and was far inferior to the example offered here.

This is a significant coin which is missing from many specialized collections of Dahlonega half eagles.

Ex Heritage 4/2020: 4439 (as NGC AU58 without CAC approval) which sold for $5,520.
