THE FIRST OF TWO HIGH GRADE 1860-D HALF EAGLES
Variety 46-EE. Large D (designated by PCGS). This variety is very rare with just a few known.
Both of the Large D varieties (46-EE and 46-FF) are present in this collection and, as far as I am aware, the only other offering to include both was the Bass sales of 1999-2001. Of the two, 46-EE is the rarer.
This lustrous orange-gold example is not quite at the AU58 level but it is clearly better than the typical AU55 of this date. The strike is soft at the centers which appears to be typical for the Large D half eagles of 1860. A few tiny marks on Liberty’s face are not detracting and this piece has nice overall eye appeal.
The last two PCGS AU55 1860-D Medium D half eagles (the more common of the two major varieties) brought $5,405 in March 2017 and $4,406 in August 2014. The most recent APRs for the 1860-D Large D in PCGS AU55 are $5,170 and $6,756; both in September 2017. This is the only 55+ graded by PCGS.
An interesting opportunity for the advanced specialist.
