PCGS/CAC AU58 1854-D HALF EAGLE

Variety 36-AA. Large D mintmark (designated by PCGS).

The 1854-D is among the two or three most available half eagles from Dahlonega. The 1853-D is slightly more available in higher grades, but nice AU58s of this date are available from time to time.

Examples of this date come weakly struck or decently struck, depending on the die variety, and this piece falls in the “sharp” class. The edges do not show extensive beveling and the centers are crisp. The luster is a bit flat but this appealing 1854-D has near-Mint State sharpness and very clean surfaces.

Just a single PCGS/CAC AU58 1854-D has ever sold at auction, and it brought a strong $7,475 as Stack’s Bowers 2011 ANA: 9416.

This would make a solid type example for the collector seeking a single high grade half eagle from the Dahlonega mint.

CAC has approved nine in this grade with two finer.
