The 1853-D is among the more available half eagles from Dahlonega. It is available from time to time in AU58 and its relative affordability makes it a popular issue amongst type collectors.
This is an above-average example for the grade which shows a typical soft strike as is typical for this variety. The surfaces are lustrous and show light wear on the high spots while the fields are mostly free of abrasions; a small cluster of marks opposite star two is not detracting.
Since the start of 2017 there are seven APRs for this date in PCGS AU58, and the prices realized range from a low of $3,720 (2/2020) to a high of $6,169 (3/2017).
This coin represents good value for the type as a jump to an MS61 would double the cost.
